As intercity traffic is expected to increase ahead of the holiday period, experts are issuing important warnings and safe driving tips for drivers preparing for long-distance journeys. Road safety during holiday travel is not limited to obeying traffic rules; fatigue, distraction, neglected vehicle maintenance and mistakes made in moments of panic can also create serious risks.

Vehicle maintenance, break planning and safe driving warnings before a holiday journey

Road and Traffic Safety Consultant Özgür Şener emphasized that drivers should start their journey well-rested, noting that tiredness and loss of concentration during long drives can increase the risk of accidents.

During long journeys, drivers are advised to take a break every 2–2.5 hours. Getting out of the vehicle, taking short walks and doing simple movements to support blood circulation can help reduce fatigue. It is also important to check the route in advance, review weather and traffic conditions, and make sure that all required vehicle equipment is complete before setting off. Drivers should avoid using mobile phones while driving, and all calls or messages should be handled during planned breaks. Seat belts should be worn not only by the driver but also by all passengers, including those seated in the back.

Vehicle maintenance before a holiday journey is also one of the key steps for safe driving. Checking tire pressure, brakes, lights, windshield wipers, battery and engine condition before departure can help prevent possible risks on the road.

According to experts, one of the biggest dangers during breakdowns, accidents or technical problems is panic. In such situations, the vehicle should be moved to a safe area, hazard lights should be turned on, warning triangles should be placed at an appropriate distance, and passengers should wait in a safe location.

Simple but critical safe driving tips and precautions can play a major role in preventing accidents during holiday journeys. For a safe trip, drivers should prepare both themselves and their vehicles before hitting the road.
